چکیده
The relationships between the carotid baroreflex and the nonlinear chaotic dynamics of short-term arterial blood pressure control was investigated. Studies in conscious dogs with their baroreceptors either intact (control group: n=7) or surgically isolated (intervention group: n=7), demonstrated deterministic chaotic behavior in mean arterial blood pressure. To assess nonlinear dynamical behavior, we constructed phase-space trajectories from the time series data. The correlation dimension of the reconstructed trajectories was measured using the Grassberger-Procaccia algorithm. A significant increase (PcO.01) in the correlation dimension was measurable between the control (3.46k0.38) and intervention groups (4.59k0.23). Sensitive dependence on initial conditions as determined by the largest Lyaponuv exponents, revealed a significant (Pc0.01) decrease in the intervention group (0.26k0.03) when compared with the control group (0.40k0.04). Surrogate data analysis involving the removal of essential nonlinear characteristics from the original data using phase randomisation, revealed that the correlation dimension did not converge over the range of embedding dimensions possible, and that the nonlinear forecasting ability decreased.

Effect of upper arm cuff pressure on pulse morphology using photoplethysmography.
Study of Arterial pressure and flow variation when external pressure applied is critical in understanding clinical relevance of pulse. We propose a distributed model of entire human arterial tree to describe the hemodynamic changes due to pressure applied on the brachial artery. Input to this distributed model is from a four element Windkessel model. We measured the blood volume during brachial...

We examine various independent component analysis (ICA) digital signal processing algorithms for estimating the arterial oxygen saturation (SpO2) as measured by a reflective pulse oximeter. The ICA algorithms examined are FastICA, Maximum Likelihood ICA (ICAML), Molgedey and Schuster ICA (ICAMS), and Mean Field ICA (ICAMF). The signal processing includes pre-processing bandpass filtering to eli...
متن کاملPresentation of a Non-invasive Method of Estimating Arterial Stiffness by Modeling Blood Flow and Arterial Wall Based on the Determination of Elastic Module of Arterial Wall
Introduction: Arterial stiffness is an important predictor of cardiovascular risk. Several indices have been introduced to estimate the arterial stiffness based on the changes in the brachial blood pressure. Since the substitution of the blood pressure changes in the central arteries such as carotid with the blood pressure changes in the brachial results in error in the blood...

Quantitative characterization of carotid atherosclerosis and classification into either symptomatic or asymptomatic is crucial in terms of diagnosis and treatment planning for a range of cardiovascular diseases. This paper presents a computer-aided diagnosis (CAD) system (Atheromatic™, patented technology from Biomedical Technologies, Inc., CA, USA) which analyzes ultrasound images and classifi...
متن کاملThe exploration & forensic analysis of computer usage data in the elderly.
Unobtrusive in-home computer monitoring could one day be used to deliver cost-effective diagnostic information about the cognitive abilities of the elderly. This could allow for early detection of cognitive impairment and would additionally be coupled with the cost advantages that are associated with a semi-automated system. Before using the computer usage data to draw conclusions about the par...
